Parental Mental Health in 2024
Parenting is one of the most demanding roles a person can have. While it brings incredible joy to witness your little ones grow and learn, the challenges of raising them can often feel overwhelming. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic challenges, and various other social, environmental, and political stressors have created challenges for parents leading to worsening mental health outcomes.
The truth is, parental mental health is often a taboo topic. The stigma ignores the pressures of parenthood and the need to prioritize parents' well-being. The pressure on parents can be especially overwhelming when society often views self-care as neglectful or selfish. However, much like on an airplane, you must put on your own oxygen mask before you can assist anyone else. Taking care of yourself is essential for being able to care for your family in the best way you can.
Parental Mental Health and GivingTuesday at SNP
As a family services organization, we witness firsthand the impact of mental health issues on parents and families, especially during the early stages of parenthood (prenatal and postnatal). This is why our GivingTuesday campaign this year (on December 3rd) will focus on parental mental health, not only in recognizing its connection to childhood mental health and overall family wellness but in recognizing that each parent deserves the chance to thrive on their own accord.
At Saanich Neighbourhood Place, our programs are designed with a focus on mental health to ensure that parents and families are equipped to navigate parenthood with confidence. The donations we raise will directly support our free and essential programs, providing the tools families need to flourish. Some of these programs include:

Making an Impact:
With your donation, we want to expand the reach of our impact on the families we serve, reinforcing the message of our campaign: Investing in parental mental health is essential for nurturing happy and resilient families. We aim to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding parental mental health. In the coming weeks, we will launch a social media campaign aimed at unpacking the various aspects of parental mental health and addressing taboo subjects that often go unspoken.
By prioritizing parental mental health, we aim to build a supportive community for parents, raise essential funds for our programs, and create an environment where discussing real issues facing parents is not only normalized but encouraged.
There are many ways you can participate in this campaign!
Thank you for joining us in this important mission. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for families in our community.
