Our Territorial Acknowledgment:
Saanich Neighbourhood Place is located on the unceded lands of the Lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking peoples of the Songhees and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) Nations and the SENĆOŦEN-speaking peoples of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. We live, we learn, we play, and we do our work on these occupied territories.
We acknowledge that each of these Nations has a continuing unique relationship to these lands and seas that has existed since time immemorial.
We acknowledge that acts of colonization (such as requiring Indigenous children to attend residential schools and the ongoing high rates of Indigenous children in care), make many inequities for First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in multiple forms. Despite acts of colonization, Indigenous people continue to have vibrant communities and cultures.
As a family-serving organization, we recognize that we have the responsibility to work towards truth and reconciliation through responding to the Calls To Action. We are open to suggestions and consultations, especially with local Indigenous Nations, on how our organization can continue to work towards reconciliation. Through the work we do on this land, we are accountable to the following Nations: Xwesepsum (Esquimalt), Songhees, W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip), W̱SIḴEM (Tseycum), SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout), MÁLEXEŁ (Malahat), and BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin).
We are grateful for the abundance of resources and education created by these First Nations to guide our solidarity and support of Indigenous peoples on these lands. You can access some of these resources below.
